Opera Answers Questions
One of our readers, Skitz, was bold enough to e-mail Opera about their recently announced upcoming Nintendo DS webbrowser. Head inside for some details.
One of our readers, Skitz, did what many people would like to do but didn't: e-mail Opera about the features of their upcoming webbrowser. The result? An answer from an Opera spokesperson.
First of all, Skitz asked whether the browser will feature some kind of censoring to block out 'inappropriate' content. While his motivation for this question remains unknown, the reply from Opera was that the browser will browse the full Internet, only censored by the user. Whether this means that it is possible to set up some filters in the browser itself remains unknown, but neither Opera or Nintendo will prevent you from browsing adult-only websites.
Opera added that you will have the same basic functionality as Opera for Desktop. Although the built-in e-mail client was already confirmed to be not-included, it appears that the pop-up stopper (mentioned explicitly in the e-mail) will be incorporated.
For Flash-based content, Opera replied that in order to run these rich-media objects, there would need to be a flash plug-in for the DS browser. As far as the Opera spokesperson could tell such a plug-in is not available today.
And finally, the question asked by many already. As the press release only mentioned a Japanese release, will the browser be brought over to the United States or Europe? Opera statement was short on this issue: Nintendo is now planning its launch in Japan this June, they are still deciding on global launch plans. Stay tuned!
Thanks to Skitz for giving us the heads-up using the news-submit.

Sorry about double post, but I forgot to answer Ben's question; sorry no, I don't know about Java yet. But apparently chat rooms will work, so I'm pretty sure Java DS will be available for download. :)
Woot! Yay for Skitz!!!
wow! this is cool.
@Jay: Yeah, I must have gotten the questions mixed up...
i really hope it will be able to have java. java = pwnage and awesome q and a's
So it was a bunch of e-mails? I don't get how you knew every page would work when you asked if every page would work two questions before that.
@Dennis: Oh yeah. :D Sorry about the mistake...
http://media.putfile.com/DS-browser-clip that's a vid i found on the opera forums. it's short, but it explains the discrepancy between the top and bottom screens. apparently, the top is the zoomed in view, which you control by moving a box on the zoomed out view on the bottom screen. :)
That's not what it says Skitz: it says you can browse the pages, it doesn't say the content on it will function as you're used to.
Which all this information was basicly said on there forums.
Really Ben?! When was that announced? This means sites like Nintendo Europe and Nintendo America will work on DS right? :P @Jay: No, it was through e-mail. I asked questions in my e-mail, they replied. :P
So, what about Java? Also, there is a homebrew program just now that allows Flash apps to run on DS.
5. Will every website available to see on the computer, be available on the DS's version? Or will there have to be DS-only sites? -All. :-) 7. You say EVERY webpage that is viewable on the computer, will be available on the DS's net yes? Does that include chat rooms, forums and pages like that? Will Private Messaging systems work on it? E-mail accounts? Will everything work as it would on this 'net? -You should be able to browse all Web pages, including blog sites, forums, everything. Note: it's important these sites test their pages in Opera for Desktop. There they can view what their page will look like on mobile devices, including the DS. Using Opera, select Shift+F11 and you'll thereby activate Small-Screen Rendering. Was this a live interview or something?
Also, I have added quite a few more in this thread: http://forums.nintendo.com/nintendo/board/message?board.id=ds&message.id=2205139&view=by_date_ascending&page=1 Just thought you'd be interested. :)
yeah those are very important. i cant wait to know how much extra ram i'll be able to play with :)
well, as long as there is flash I will be happy. they've gotta make java too.
E-mail and flash plug-in are important things for my personal view...
Actually, I think Flash was denied there, only Japan was mentioned as a release and no stuff about the censoring.
