NDS Nintendo DS Gets Voice Chat And More

The Nintendo DS will get voice chat options and more... or so Reggie Fils-Aime claimed today.

According to Yahoo News, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of sales and marketing and idol Reggie Fils-Aime claimed a few new upcoming features for the Nintendo DS today. First of all, the Nintendo DS will get Voice Chat.

Available March 20, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection-enabled title Metroid Prime: Hunters will feature Voice Chat. Players who join up for multiplayer battles over Nintendo's wireless service will be able to talk to each other through the system's built-in microphone before and after games, but not during, said Reggie Fils-Aime.

Also, gamers from the United States arise, as Nintendo of America intends to bring the download kiosks to America. Beginning in late March, the company plans to deploy electronic kiosks at thousands of U.S. retailers including Best Buy Co. and GameStop Corp. The kiosks will automatically send a notice to nearby Nintendo DS units, offering game demos, movie trailers and other content for temporary download. But beware, as once the DS is turned off, the downloaded content is gone.

  • atleast we can chat right out of the box without urchase of a headset, only using the DS hardware.

  • My op is thank god no in-game voice chat, you should hear some of the dorks when my bud plays Day of Defeat.

  • I believe they if they could've added in-game voice chat in MP:H, they would've, seeing as voice chat is only locked to friends anyway. But if you've seen the trailer, or looked at the screenshots, you'd have to believe that Hunters is really pushing the DS. The graphics are beyond anything yet seen on the system, and by the looks of things, the game is running at a constant 30fps. Personally, I simply don't think there's any room for voice chat on the hardware ingame. Maybe if it was something 2d or less grunty, say... Tetris DS or something.

  • voice chat during in-game will probably make the DS lagg maybe?

  • Sweet, Google is developing VoIP for PSP and Nintendo is developing VoIP for NDS.

  • Voice chat is a great addition. I'm happy it's in the game. Pity it's not during the game but I can see the reasons it's not. You would need to press a button on screen to enable voice chat and by the time your done fiddling about your dead ;) And also all the games sound will be muted when you hit the voice chat button. Might be a bit distracting and annoying.

  • Yo this game is the truth! I think nintendo are testing the waters if they dont get taken to court over it they will bring it out of the lobby and into the arena.

  • Yeah, just found that out. Guess that sort of solves everything...except little kids that add random people (And they add them) to their list on those websites you see everywhere...

    Skitz, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • Well, you can only chat with friends Skitz. So that solved 2/3.

    skarma, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • So voice chat in MP:H is definite?! Wow. :O That's great news, and its a good start. But how on Talon 5 are Nintendo gonna filter swearing, kids giving away personal info, and Friend Code swapping? :?

    Skitz, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • We're not giving Microsoft too much credit at all. If you want a more even perspective, the PSP online service has chat in-game and lobbies. And that's free. This is a good add-on everyone will agree, but could be more. Like Nintendo's WFC in general. Just a bit over hyped, but they can work on that for Revolution.

  • I wouldnt like it in game anyway...imjan poeple yelling out swarewords after you kill them, bad for the littlys, then again it would be the littlys doing it.

  • awww i just sent this in lol

    spikeyjac, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • And there goes a free ban :) (and some modding on the comments...) First downloads available in the U.S.: - Tetris DS - Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day - Mario Kart DS - Meteos - True Swing Golf - Pokémon Trozei - Metroid Prime Hunters video clip

  • Anime, stop being a little fool... I agree with Ben.

    Jordan Revo-Europe, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • Not bad, now when do they come to the UK + EU?

    skarma, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • I'm worried about the voice chat. Isn't it going to kill the DS' battery?

    Lifis, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • Anime, just because you expect the bare minimum doesn't mean everyone else does. Voice chat before/after gameplay is getting there. In game would be really good. And like shaunj6 said, they do need to do some research on how online works. They should take XBOX Live as a prime example, and at least offer text chat/voice chat in all future Wi-Fi enabled games. I think they should also make demo downloads over Wi-Fi, it's possible.

    skarma, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • I recall them saying it takes lots of RAM to have in game voice chat.

    rocken, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • No voice chat DURING gameplay... Oh dear! Nintendo really need to do some more research into how online play really works, and then try again...

    shaunj66, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • or at least i tried
