ALL Play-Yan Plays Games

Nintendo's media player, the Play-Yan (or: Play-Chan according to others), is capable of running small applications.

Nintendo of Japan has opened up a small page which will be used in the future to spread 12 different 'garage games' for their latest hardware: the Play-Yan. Every week (on Friday), a new game will become available for free download. The games appear to be in asf (Advanced Systems Format) format, a filetype used often for video. Running the file on your pc results into seeing the splash page for the game, while hearing some very 'retro' sounds.

The first game, named 'Insect' can be downloaded here. Take note that in order to play the game, you will need the Play-Yan media player, which can still be pre-ordered at our sponsor Lik-Sang.

Nintendo of Japan also pointed out that a 13th game will become available exclusively for their Club Nintendo members (the Japanese version of the Nintendo VIP membership)

  • wat is it like a mp3 player thats got games stored in it?

  • No, it's a GBA-like cartridge that takes SD-cards as input. On the SD-cards you can store MP3 (music) or MPEG4 (video) files, which can then be played on the GBA or Nintendo DS. Today Nintendo showed the game-function too. Place the small games on the SD-card. Insert the SD-card in the Play-Yan adapter and put the whole in your GBA (or Nintendo DS)

  • SD Cards are cheap compared to Sony's. SD Cards (that only work on DS) = ?45 for 1 gigabyte MemoryStickDuo(psp) = $550 for 2 gigabyte. Translating it, the DS cost is better.
