ETC Sony PSP US Release Announced

We know we're a GBA / Nintendo DS dedicated website, but the Sony PSP is a direct competitor...

Sony Computer Entertainment America today announced the PSP release details for the US. From March 24, the 'PSP Value Pack' will be available throughout America for a suggested retail price of $249.99. In addition to the PSP itself, the Value Pack contains a 32 MB Memory Stick, headphones with remote control, a battery pack, an AC adaptor, a soft case and cleaning cloth, a demo UMD disc and a special UMD video release of the film Spider-Man 2.

While the $249.99 price tag on the PSP is considerable higher than the Nintendo DS price of $149.99, the PSP line-up is considerably larger. 24 games will become available during the so-called 'launch window' (yes, Sony likes this term too):

 Ape Escape ATV Offroad Fury
 Darkstalkers Chronicle Dynasty Warriors
 Fifa 2005 Gretzky
 Lumines Metal Gear Acid
 MLB MVP Baseball
 NBA NBA Street Showdown
Need for Speed Rivals NFL Street 2 Unleashed
 Rengoku Ridge Racer
 Smartbomb Spider-Man 2
Tiger Woods PGA Tour Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix
Twisted Metal: Head On Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade
 Wipeout Pure World Tour Soccer
As can be seen, an impressive line-up. However, as good as the Sony PSP may seem, we'll keep covering the Nintendo handhelds.

  • It's considerably more expensive than I would of expected. Any news on the European release?

  • not yet. However, EA is showing releases for the PSP in Europe on March 24... A bit odd.

  • Nintendo's DS launch line up wasnt too good, I'll admit that, but out of all the cliche'd sayings, I have found one that is consistently true, especially in the case of the DS. "Good things come to those who wait" Good things indeed, Sony may have a considerably bigger launch line up, but as we all know, Sony goes for quantity, not quality, always has, always will. Nintendo released a strong, although small, set of launch games, good enough to sweep the floor with Sony's big, but weakly put together, set of games. And, need I remind you, that mere months away is the japanese release of Nintendogs, which means that the US and Europe releases cant be far off. And dont forget the wi-fi support nintendo has been promising, and the almighty lord of "I wish it was online" games, ( which will undoubtedly be online on the DS) Animal Crossing DS.

  • want a bigger box next time Peter? :P anyways, just read a press release from Sony that they're delaying the PSP in Europe because of expected shortages
