A person using the nickname 'Weinberg2002' on the Nintendo-HQ forums did what everyone wanted: he asked Nintendo of America whether the Nintendo DS would be region-free...

The answer he got is a good one for importers:

"Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo,

It may interest you to know that the Nintendo DS will be a universal system that can be played anywhere on the planet. Further, it can play games purchased anywhere. Please note, however, that accessories purchased in different parts of the world may not be compatible with the Nintendo DS you purchase.

  or use a stepdown convertor, that way you can 'transform' your German socket to an American one <img src="images/smileys/1.gif"> (works great for my Japanese GBA SP)

  I don't really understand all this. My son wants a DS for xmas and I have emailed company in USA who don't seem to be giving me the answers I want. Can he use it anywhere? can he use gameboy games he already has, or will they be different? when you say accessories are different, how will this affect him? AND, is it better to just wait till it's launcehd over here?!?!
