ALL LG claims "Handheld gaming era is over"

LG Electronics, known best for their smartphones, has issued out a bold statement today: "The era of dedicated handheld gaming platform is over." Now we'd like to know about your opinion on that.

In a press release issued out today, the CEO of LG's Mobile department makes a bold statement on handheld gaming. According to the (possibly overpaid) president, the latest smartphones will take over.

"The era of dedicated handheld gaming platform is over," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "Today's smartphones have the horsepower to compete with the best portable gaming devices and LG Optimus 3D is our proof. We think 3D is the natural next step in portable entertainment and LG is eager to throw its hat in the ring with the Optimus 3D and Gameloft's 'must-be-seen-to-be-believed' titles."

Nintendo recently claimed that they see the iPhone as a possible threat, although Nintendo of Japan also started working on the release of a Pokon app for Apple's iOS.

We're interested in hearing your opinion: do you see smartphones replacing handheld gaming, or do (all-touch) smartphones just don't have what it takes to control your games the way you want?

 • Exactly what gave LG the authority to comment on handheld? Have them ever made anything that can do handheld gaming?

 • Their latest 3D-phone? According to mr Park, it should give you about the same gaming experience as on a Nintendo 3DS. I strongly disagree though, simply because most smartphones don't bring in the "regular" controls but instead use a virtual controlpad on the screen thus blocking part of your view (aside from the fact that I like to feel the buttons while playing). Furthermore, even though there is/could be a handful of phones bringing in the regular controls, the majority of smartphones won't. Thus, the games developed for the platforms (Android, iOS, etc) won't fully use that kind of controls either.

 • I don't consider any phone as gaming device. Just as calculators and watches can play some games that doesn't make them handheld game console. Smartphones can definitely play some simple games, besides from the I/O problem, the device is hindered by OS. A good portion of CPU and memory is dedicated on tons of background processes. That not only lower battery life, the rendering speed is drastically reduced as well. The best they can do is to run some ported simple Flash games. So what right does LG have to declare handheld gaming to be dead when they have never even entered the industry?

 • Well, there are some games like Crusade of Destiny and Ravensword, so I'm not sure whether that argument stands...

 • To be honest, I think a video game industry crash will eventuarlly happen again. Mainly because of ideals like this, and the draining of quaility, output and moral.
