3DS Nintendo UK talks about 3DS advertising

UK marketing director Dawn Paine talks about the 3DS advertising and tour facts.

In the UK 85 per cent of the nation will have seen Nintendos TV ads three times before launch. With nearly half a million will have had time to go hands on with the device. These are some shocking statistics which just prove how much the 3DS is a runaway train. However Dawn Paine is quite concerned with how the 3DS can be seen in advertising, a 3D console advertised 2D.

Dawn Paine Nintendo of UKs Marketing Director talked about the campaign as been a celebration of the 3D experience. With there been two key elements, "experiential and advertising". Which the fusing together been a departure for Nintendo, creating a new experience they haven't done before. The campaign will be showing; "consumers, real people, getting their first hands-on with 3DS at one of the events. And that in turn drives the people who see the ads to the sampling push. It's a virtuous circle."

Paine is quite excited about the campaign because its real people, real reactions. Nothing been faked. "There's always a question about how you execute a 3D product in 2D. That's where the consumer reactions come into play. It's not about the intricacies of the technology. The fact you can't see it on screen will tease and push people to trying it for themselves."

  • I don't remember the prelaunch advertising for the DS. Least Australian based ones. But they where all over the "Touching is Good" slogan. One thing I loved was the original DSs UK box. All Black and Red with the epic DS logo everywhere. Reminds me of the layout you had around at the time after the GBA.ngceurope or what ever the site was called. Here in Australia I don't think theres been much TV wise- then again I'm not really in a region which will have the tours around it- so theres no point in NAL buying ad space. But we do get the tours Australia wide in the capital cities, and other then that I think thats all. I think what is selling it so far are the geeks and the nerds who owned the original DS line. And possibly the kids with parents who buy them anything they dam well want. But I don't think launch is for the masses yet.

  • Is it me, or was the marketing campaign for (regular) DS MUCH larger? Here in the Netherlands I haven't seen any ads yet, didn't hear about any roadshows, and even stores are pretty much holding back on showcasing their line-up. With DS, there were tv-ads, newspapers full on Touch-loving articles, flyers from stores shouting "we've got DS soon!" and various roadshows even at the smallest malls. I'm somewhat disappointed really :-/
