3DS DS-x2.com asks: 3DS - The movies?

As it's Sunday, most gamers often just sit down with their favorite game(s). Soon, the 3DS will bring us 3D movies to our houses as well. We are wondering what movie(s) will be first to be released, and are interested in your guesses.

  • I wasn't too impressed with 3D in movies myself either (Avatar, Alice in Wonderland), but the 3D I saw on the 3DS's screen... that's something totally different. Could be because of the smaller screen causing you to focus more on the whole than in the cinema (where you can actually only see part of the screen itself, and get distracted easier by the edges of your view)?

  • I've seen trailers on the 3DS and they're actually very impressive. I suppose it depends what you are in to. I quite like 3D movies.

  • Truth be told, the 3D movies I've seen haven't impressed me so it's not a feature I'd actively make use of on the console for that reason. It hasn't really added much to the movies I've seen and the best use of 3D I've seen was in an advert before one of the films. I think I'll just stick to the games. Not one for watching movies on the go anyway, always listening to music or occasionally playing the DS, and at home I have a PS3 for Blu-rays. I'm sure some people will use it, just not me.

  • Well, I started thinking about the resolution of the 3DS's screens, and streaming might work. After all, we're able to stream on our home computers with a resolution of movies far beyond the 3DS's 400*240 (times 2, due to 2 eyes). The 3DS can only go online through Wireless LAN, so in theory there should be enough bandwidth to stream the movies indeed. As for mobile phones, I doubt their (regular!) connection would suffice...

  • Interesting comments Dennis. Then what if you are not downloading the movies but streaming them through Netflix service? Movies can be released to homes of those who have 3DTV without the discs gather dust in the stores. Also, mobile phones are now adding parallax display as well, so mobile devices can utilize that as well. However, the biggest obstacle is that Netflix doesn't purchase new stuff. They earn a lot more money from getting those DVDs from $5 bin. Thus there is no way that would go for 3D movies for another 2 ~ 3 years.

  • Downloading a 3D-movie seems a bit "much" I think... Then again, the cart-based sales of movies didn't work out on GBA either (still got a few Pokémon cartridges here I think)

  • We know Disney and DreamWorks are interested. To be honest I doubt there'll be any movies at all...

  • How to Train your Dragon would be a safe bet but will these be carts or downloads?
