3DS Nintendo 3DS Press Conference - Tidbits

As we don't have anyone in Japan working for us (contact us if you know a volunteer), we'll have to do with the various Twitter-feeds and such to bring you the first details on the Nintendo 3DS conference currently held.

Today, Nintendo of Japan is holding a press conference in which the company will reveal the (Japanese) releasedate, price and some tidbits of new information about the next generation handheld. In this article we'll try to summarize the most important facts until the official press releases are issued.

So what do we know so far?

  • The 3DS design is final. One of the modifications compared to earlier versions is a retractable stylus
  • The 3DS will have its own set of Mii's (known from Wii already)
  • Using the camera, the 3DS can take your picture and transform it into a Mii automagically
  • Mii's can be transformed into a QR-code, which you can scan using the 3DS's camera and import other Mii's. Of course we'll allow you to add your QR-code to your DS-x2.com account soon...
  • During gameplay, you can pause a game, use the in-device internet browser and resume play (useful when looking for a walkthrough at those hard times)
  • The 3DS can merge two pictures into one. Imagine merging your face with that of Iwata...
  • There will be a Virtual Console in which we'll get to see revivals of GameBoy and GameBoy Color games. Be sure to check out our games-database for interesting GBA games, as we expect them to follow too
  • Tag mode is back. Using the new 3DS tag mode, the handheld will collect and store data for multiple games at once while walking past other people with a 3DS. In contrast with 'regular' DS, you don't have to be playing the game at the time to exchange data

And finally: The Nintendo 3DS will launch in Japan on February 26, 2011. Europe and the US will see the handheld in March 2011. No price was given for Europe and/or the US. In Japan, the 3DS will cost 25.000 Yen (compare that to $300 or EUR 220; prices are likely to be set at $299 and EUR 249)

  • A little more expensive than I would have hoped.

  • Yeah $250 USD and $300 in Australia is my bet now.

  • Rather expensive in Japan. It's always slightly more over there, and I doubt it'll put people off of buying it given the lineup of games coming, but its slightly taken me by surprise. I do think they'll nail the price in the US to $250 as $299 will not go down well over there. Europe, I'd hope for around the 220 Euro mark but it'll probably be a straight conversion from the US which will not doubt put many off.

  • Seems I wasn't that far off with the releasedates and prices for US and EU. Japan surprises me though...
