Activision closes down Red Octane studios
Last week, our colleagues from Kotaku reported they learned that Activision was closing down its Red Octane studios, creators of the original Guitar Hero. Today, it's final.
According to reports, Activision has confirmed that it will close its Red Octane studios as part of its 2010 strategy. Activision earlier disclosed that they plan to release less Guitar Hero titles, which more or less makes sense to ease down on the studio as well.

They really wouldn't have needed to close Red Octane if they hadn't decided to release so many unnecessary Guitar Hero games. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy them, especially 2 and 3, but everything after that point wasn't really necessary. Think most of these developers will get other jobs within Activision but condolences to them for this.
About 30-40 have left, the others are relocated to another studio within the Activision empire, as far as I understand.
Not surprised, ever since the success of Guitar Freak (yes, the original, not Guitar Hero) brought out way too much exact same games. The market is now flooded with rhythm games especially guitar and no one is earning enough to cover for the cost. What Guitar Hero and Rock Band should have done was just release nothing but downloadable songs and characters instead of the exact same game. StepMania allows you to download song pack, character, theme, and course all for free and 100% fully customizable and it's a great game.
