ALL DSi Can't Play MP3s & Could Be Region Locked

It seems that the Nintendo DSi might not be region free like previous DS models according to Reggie, although he isn't entirely sure.

You may recall the the newly announced Nintendo DSi was meant to be able to download applications and games through the internet, however they were to be regional downloads. This made many wonder if the DSi itself would be region locked and someone went ahead and asked Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime about it who replied saying "To be honest I dont know for sure, I will look into it."

Reggie then went on to say that he believed it to be region locked, but would this affect current DS titles that have no region coding on them?

Along with the region lock question Reggie was asked if the DSi's music playback allowed for MP3s in which Reggie revealed only AAC format music could be played.

  • Most likely it's locked to a specific DSiWare region.

  • It's impossible for the DSi to be region locked for the retail games, because (other than being an industry first for a portable console) if this is the case, the DS Lite will be region free anyway, and DSi should be damaged by that. I am convinced that the region lock will belong to the DSi downloaded games, just like it happens for Virtual Console, Live Arcade and Wii Ware.
