NDS Widescreen Nintendo DS Rumoured... and Debunked

A new rumour hit the web: an advertisement shows a widescreen Nintendo DS.

Don't get your hopes up just yet, even though the Internet is going crazy once more due to a magazine ad. This time, an advertisement by Japanese publisher Nippon Ichi (parent of NIS America) shows Disgaea DS on a widescreen Nintendo DS. Could Nintendo be planning a Nintendo DS revision?

Now what do we see exactly? A Nintendo DS unit with the D-pad moved slightly to the left, the ABXY buttons to the right, the start/select buttons moved upwards and two HUGE wide screens showing some Digaea DS artwork. Now there these screens are exactly where things go wrong... One can clearly see that the 'artist' behind this advertisement more or less goofed up: the screens do not align at all!

Even though it was pretty obvious already, the people behind Eurogamer got in contact with Nintendo to knock the rumour down. As usual, Nintendo responded that the claims are "purely rumor and speculation".

 • I don't know about that, Nintendo has known to be deny these kind of projects until the week before its release. That's how DS Lite came to be in the first place.

 • I doubt it just going off that poster, but you never know what Nintendo is planning for E3 I suppose.

 • LeSomeGuy: true, but a widescreen (16:9) would either leave pixels unused or stretch the entire image, basically render your current Nintendo DS games 'weird'. If Nintendo is planning a different screen ratio, it'll be a Nintendo DS successor.

 • The hardware may render border into the display for backward compatibility. Just like when old GameBoy games were put onto GameBoy Color or Advance a colorful border is added around the sides. The same idea is also applied by Mario party 8 when wide screen resultion is set. But yeah, it does look like Nipponichi just Photoshop the pictures onto a DSLite image for their poster.
