ETC Thought for the Day

The GBA is Dead!

While this sounds like a rather alarmist headline it's really not meant to be it's just that we've noticed that a few news outlets (and our very own forums) have recently been reporting that the DS is now Nintendo's handheld with the GBA trailing far behind.

They may have a point too with not only the undeniable popularity of the DS but the fact that the majority of publishers GBA release schedules looking very sparse.

Even our reviews have become more DS weighted to reflect the amount of releases but we do pledge to continue to review GBA titles as long as they are released. We may even have to resort to taking a look at anything we've missed over the last six months or so just to balance it all out.

What do you think? Why not discuss it now in our forums.

 • It's Nintendo's fault. There's still a market for it, but Nintendo's utter lack of releases (with the exception of Final Fantasy games) basically ruins the viability of the platform as anything other than a platform for little kids (through crappy licensed games). Thank God for Atlus, who kept the GBA alive in 2006. Seems like even their support is over now. Still think it's the best handheld platform yet.

 • It's true... only a few titles are still set for the GBA, with many of them being easy cash-ins on upcoming movies. There's little new IP heading for us...

 • I think the DS truly has taken over as Nintendo's handheld. I'm not complaining though.

 • It's natural that the GBA is dead, there is the Nintendo DS out.

 • Cmon Dennis, thats a good one...GBA dead, sure ok. Lets all just act like games such as Dogz 2 are not still coming out for it.

 • TMNT was an example for the GBA that some good games are coming out even though it's dead.

 • There are still titles heading for the GBA, but not nearly the amount of attention necessary is spent on the majority of those titles. Sure there are gems among the few titles left, but developers and publishers are moving onwards.

 • no the gb has been out for many years even though ds can play those games I dont think nintendo should just focus on the ds and wii gb is what made nintendo what it is today
