European Virtual Console Fridays - 29th December
So what retro classics can you download today on the Wii's Virtual console. Sim City and Castlevania IV maybe? Check inside for whats on offer today.
As every Friday, Nintendo of Europe update the European Virtual Console service on the Wii, where you can log-in at any time and purchase timeless classics from days gone by. Five/b> new games are now available, and I'll give you the lowdown on what to get and what not to get.
NES Baseball Choose one of the six teams, and head out into the stadium for a friendly round of (seemingly) Japanese baseball. Simple graphics, catchy music and satisfying sound effects make this game a plus for you graphic whores out there. Considering your still impressed by NES graphics that is. No stat recording is a bit of a letdown, but it doesn't exactly ruin the game. Baseball will set you back 500 Wii Points, and is reccomended if you have some Wii Points burning a hole in your virtual pocket, but not a first choice.
Ice Hockey Did you buy Football/Soccer on the Virtual Console yet? Ice Hockey is somewhat like that, except it's fun. And addictive. NES-style beeps and bop sound effects aren't great, but not annoying. The graphics are very simple as NES games go, and the controls are a bit more slippery than Football, but it fits as you are playing on ice not a football field. 500 Wii Points will net you this slippery fella, and by heck it's worth it.
SNES Sim City Ever played The Sims? I'm sure you have, and you've probably played Sim City 4 right? Well this, my friend, is where it all started. Not specifically the SNES itself but this is the SNES edition of the original Sim City. Build Residential, Commercial and Industrial buildings; connect up some power; and watch the city come alive in possibly one of the first 'Sim(ulation)' games. I don't care what you say, you are spending 800 Wii Points on this now. Thats an order.
Super Castlevania IV The first Castlevania on the SNES is an enhanced remake of the first Castlevania. The game is an action/platformer game where you take control of Simon Belmont and take on a horde of grotesque enemies, all now enhanced with richer colours and Mode 7 graphics. The music is very dark and atmospheric, and many hardcore gamers consider the Castlevania series one of the best around. 800 Wii Points will get you this classic.
TurboGrafx R-Type R-Type is a horizontal side-scrolling shooter which sees you blasting enemies and trying to remember which way to go. Your probably thinking 'eh?', but one of the main reasons this game is difficult is trying to remember which path to take in the game, as there are multiple paths but generally only one correct way to go. Collect powerups to take on more serious enemies, as well as adding a 'Force', a little add-on to the ship that can be set to the back or front and acts as secondary fire, aswell as a shield. The game can be pretty tricky for many gamers but if you want an addictive little shooter then R-Type might be for you, ready on the Wii's Virtual Console for 800 Wii Points, though some may argue the already-released Super Star Soldier is much better (and cheaper, at 600 Wii Points).
Well thats your lot for this week, hope you download a few games this week, and I'll see you next week where you will get your low down on whats hot and whats not on the Virtual console.
