NDS Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings - Facts

An interview with Dengeki DS Style reveals more facts about the latest Final Fantasy spin-off.

Director Motomu Toriyama and co-producer Eisuke Yokoyama stated a number of interesting facts about the setting and gameplay of Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings, the announced DS spin-off to the latest entry in the main Final Fantasy series.

Revenant Wings takes place some time after the events of Final Fantasy XII and follows the story of Vaan, a pirate and one of the main characters of the original game, and Penelo, his navigator, on his search for a treasure on the floating continent of Puruvama. Other characters, including Fran, Balthier, and characters not yet introduced in the series, will join your party as the game goes on. All of the main locations of Ivalice are said to appear in the game.

In addition, Toriyama and Yokoyama declared that the battle system in Revenant Wings, while sharing some similarities with its Playstation 2 counterpart, will be mostly new. Summons will have a larger presence in Revenant Wings than in any previous Final Fantasy games and their use will be radically different.

An important goal of Revenant Wings's developers is to maximize the potential of the DS hardware. Full touch screen support is expected, and both screens will be utilized in and out of battle. Unfortunately, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection support is unlikely to be added unless latency issues are resolved.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings is not currently dated for release.

  • Hmm, I'm on the same bench as darkshadow61 on this one. The original looks great, but as for a spin off, (I feel really bad saying this,) it probably wont fit the system real well, especially considering Square-Enix's "success" and "twists" on previous systems. Of course square enix seems to be pulling out of a slump, so I wish the best to the company.
