While I was hoping for it to be 3D (even if it retained the top-down view), it looks nice though a little plain. The subtle perspective change on the buildings and scenery is a cool touch..
3D battles SHOULD be here... just steal them from Pokemon Stadium and add new backgrounds!
There are 2D battles, 3D battles would take too long. And there is so many battles in the handheld RPGs. The overworld is 3D with 2D sprites if you havn't noticed. This doesn't look bad either.
well, i'll take what 3D i can get. they could've done more, but they would have lost that classic pokemon feel. plus, random battles with 200+ different pokemon in 3D = riDICULOUS amount of animations. pokemon stadium had the space, the DS cart, i'm afraid does not.
I can't see any flash box, i can only see a static map of the world. Everytime I need the newest flash, the movie itself will redirect me to the flash page for the download, but in this case there isn't a flash box. And bottom left of the page, there is only a few of links, that brings to other static pages. I am on a Mac.
The DS cart CAN handle Nintendo 64 graphics. Maybe even more. The problem, I think, is losing the classic, portable feel. Also, like Ben said, the 3D battles on stadium take years. And there are hundreds of battles you need to go through on a traditional pokemon adventure.
I think they took the right steps. What they SHOULD have done is make some real, detailed battle backgrounds instead of blurry, colored lines. And add more frames into the main character's steps. And some NEW chipsets in the overworld. It looks too much like Ruby/Sapphire.
Here is the technical and programming stand point on this issue.
The space is of no issue with NDS, as the main cartridge can support 1 GB of memory. Pokemon 64 only uses 512 MB of scattered memories, so NDS is more than capable of handling Pokemon 64. With GBA cartridge slot for memory extension, NDS has no memory limit.
As I have mentioned various times in other post that NDS is capable of achieving amazing 3D graphics like in the new Pirates game, A.S.H., and many others.
But, the problem comes in when 3D rendering meets overwhelming number of pokemons. For each pokemon, there has to have a 3D model combining with animation for each attack. Although NDS has 2 core processors, but the rending process will exhaust all resources just for one attack.
If they can reduce the number of the pokemon to around 100 or so, NDS is capable of handling full 3D battles. But when the number of pokemon reaches 500+ as it is now, NDS is incapable of having 3D pokemon battles.
As those of you have played Tao's Adventure you will notice that there are only a few dozen kind of monsters and one attack animation for each. That's because the lacking of the internal memory to handle the 3D graphic rendering.
This problem will be solved if the pre-render process engine is fully developed, but that will add to the production cost, hence it will be cheaper and more efficient if they make it 2D.

Looks weird.
Uhm, i can't see anything in motion.
Bottom left, flash box.
As a gamer who enjoys Pokemon, I must say that looks bad, I hope the battles and gameplay redeem it.
This looks cool!
Some people might be able to see it, some might not. I think you have to have the newest version of Flash...

at curlyhairboy, i thought, (correct me if im wrong) that the ds cart has more space then a 64, um , block thingy.
