Mailbag - Issue 8
Why no Katamari for the DS? What games do us DS-x2 staffers want to see on the DS? Find out inside!
Interesting question, Donald. I definitely have to agree that Katamari Damacy would be perfect on the DS, and would sell a lot over in Japan and over here as well. I really have no idea why Keita Takahashi has a bias view of Nintendo either. He has even stated that he dislikes the Wii Controller, while even that would be a perfect control scheme for Katamari Damacy. I love Katamari, but it would be even better with a touch screen or motion sensor control scheme; yet Keita doesn't realize how much potential a Katamari game could have on a Nintendo System. I know I haven't answered your question; but even your question has nagged me in the head a few times and I can find no reason why Keita Takahasi does not put Katamari Damacy on the DS or the Wii.
Chris:IGA makes the Castlevania games, not Kojima.
The company plans to ship 6 million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007 for 250$ or Less in the US and 25000 Yen in Japan.
Dennis:Back in March, we already received unofficial word that the Wii (back then still called Revolution) would launch in Europe in November 2006. Nowadays, rumour is that November 6 is mentioned... After these new rumours, coming from a totally different Nintendo-employee, I'm pretty confident the console will launch in November indeed.
The Fuel is not used during Gameplay, but before where you have to plot a course to take in a certain level. When plotting the course, you can only use a certain amount of fuel, so that means you can't plot your course around the whole level. When plotting the Fuel Bar implements a sort of strategic form of gameplay; they have to plot a course where you also have to kill the enemy fighters. If you skip all the enemy fighters, you put the Great Fox (the main ship) in great danger.
Also, while this isn't exactly DS nor GBA related, what do you guys think the price of an extra Nintendo Wii controller would cost? There's been a ton of hype on the price of the actual system itself, but I haven't heard any speculation on the controllers. I'm hoping for something near the Gamecube's price range for controllers, if not a tiny bit more.
I agree on the Soul Calibur thing. I'd also like to see Golden Sun, Metal Gear, and any 3D action game from Capcom (DMC?).
Andrew:I'd love to see Sensible Software's Shoot 'em Up Construction Kit. Just think a being able to create your own shooters on your DS system and then share the finished game with your friends. The touch screen and stylus would be ideal for design. My next choice would be any of the Lucasarts point and click adventures (or any adventure for that matter) as I think the DS is an ideal platform for this genre. You only have to look at Another Code.
FireGalaxy:I really love the Soul Calibur & Pikmin ideas, those would be great on the Nintendo DS. What I would love to see, however, is an MMORPG like Guild Wars or World of Warcraft. Players could access all their menus on the bottom screen and use the bottom screen as a keyboard as well. I really think the Nintendo DS needs a good MMO like GW and WoW, and it could really work with all of the DS' Key Features. As for the cost of a extra Wii Controller, I'd have to say a price range from 25$-40$ (20 Euros to 30 Euros).
Dennis:Point-n-Click adventures. Simon the Sorceror, Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, the lot. Sure, the DS looks like a suitable platform for realtime strategy games like Dune and Command & Conquer, yet I think the screen with its 256x192 pixels resolution is just not adequate to show both troops (or: Pikmin) and a decent view or the surrounding area.
Matt:If they ever make a 3d Harvest Moon for DS my dreams would come true.
Because of the multiregion facility on Nintendo Handhelds I think you'll find we all import especially if there's a rather large time gap between say US and European release (Metroid Prime was around 6 weeks). We even get code, which isn't in the shops yet and games at various stages of development although we generally can't say an awful lot about these and it's not always productive given that they are half completed games. In answer to your question though, we took a decision a long time ago that we would only review games when they received a European release firstly so as not to confuse readers and secondly, it's just so much more work. Especially when they change the game for the European market.
FireGalaxy:I would love to import games, but I much rather prefer waiting for a game to release in a language I could read, anyway. Plus, sometimes the prices are a bit high. And also, I live in the US, so we get games before Europe does and therefore I get to play games such as Metroid Prime Hunters & New Super Mario Bros. before Europe does. I posted a review on MPH a few weeks before the European launch of the game and Andrew posts the review on or a bit after the European launch. I would much rather prefer posting the review before the game comes out in Europe so that European gamers have a better idea of what they are buying beforehand. Plus it would be an extra for European viewers.
Dennis:Of course we do. We even play the games ourselves as well. The reason you as our reader don't notice anything from this is that the current policy is not to publish any word on a game until it is released in Europe. Metroid Prime Hunters, Animal Crossing and Brain Training were all already thoroughly inspected by the DS-x2 staff, yet we waited until the European crowd could actually buy the titles. In origin, we're still a Europe-oriented site (although 40% of our readers comes from the United States nowadays, and roughly 10% from Japan). If we would publish a review two months before the European release, the title won't get the needed attention when it's released. That's why we're holding these titles.
Chris:I've really been wanting to import Ouendan, but the best price I can find for it (50$) scares me.

The mailbag must not get that much mail, I throw in really generic questions everytime. :P BTW if all announced online games for DS are developed, the DS will have about 27 online games by the end of the year. Two away(more) from my estimate.
@ Araknidkid: I would love an MMO as well on the DS. Even if a game such as WoW couldn't be on the DS, I'm sure it's possible that could get something quite similiar to it. @ NPC: Really? 27 Online games? I believe I was estimating 10-15... =P
Firegalaxy: is it ok if I lable you as Ali for now on in the mailbag?
Sure, Chris.
But, who cares what Keita Takahashi thinks? He retired from video game making industry several monthes ago, he's now designing children's play ground (May god have mercy on those kids). And, araknidkid, you are probably right. On single player games, NDS is capable of great graphics. But once when wi-fi multi-player MMORPG is introduced, I don't believe NDS has the capability of network input/output data while processing graphics and touch screen at same time. Each of those operation is very costly on hardware memory. Although NDS has two processors, but I don't think NDS can handle WoW style of gameplay.
The DS online limits only 4 player to communicate online at once, an interview with the head of the Nintendo WFC revealed this.
Well, in that case, I'd like to see an online game where you could hook up with 3 others and do quests and stuff. Or Worms or a Worms-like game on Wi-Fi.
