NDS Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin - Details

Head inside to check out some of the details revealed about Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin in the latest Nintendo Power.

-The game takes place during World War II unlike Dawn of Sorrow, which took us to the future -A mysterious vampire named Brauner is looking for a way to restore the house of Dracula during this time of bloodshed -The main heroes of the story are Jonathan morris, the son of John Morris Sr. and Charlotte, a magic user from the church -Jonathan wields a whip, but can use also other weapons, such as a sword or a mace -The soul system in the Sorrow games has been replaced by a totally new skill based system -Characters still level up -More focus on the items, armors & accessories than in DoS -Since the Morris clan are related to the Belmonts, Jonathan will wield the VK in some point of the game -Belmonts can wield the VK by default, but a Morris needs to do "something special" to be able to do that -Charlotte's family is somehow related to the Fernandez clan. -Jonathan & Charlotte will have a platonic relationship only -Brauner's twin-daughters are called Loretta & Stella - share their fathers goal of resurrecting Dracula -Brauner is more interested in summoning Castlevania & doesn't want her daughters involved, on some level -Brauner is a painter; His paintings serve as teleports to different locations, such as the deserts of egypt & the London-esque "Misty Town" -Soundtrack composed by Michiru Yamane -The majority of the game happens inside a castle -PoR will be bigger than DoS, perhaps even impressively bigger. -Comeback of some of SotN's & Rondo's enemy designs. -Bigger dev. team for PoR than in DoS: some developers from CotM have joined PoR's dev. team -Appearances of Bloodlines related cast? "Please look forward to it." -All the action in PoR takes place on the bottom screen of the DS, upper has Character & enemy info & map -No stylus functions -Wi-Fi: either co-op mode or a versus mode. Item shops for other players. -PoR runs an upgraded engine of DoS -Will have an animated intro

  • They removed the stylus use? It was never really that well used in the first place.

  • I might have to give this one a try.

  • Nice, hope I can load the memory from Dawn of Sorrow to unlock bonus weapons and such. I got 100% on both Hard Mode and Julius Mode, hoping that can get me something in the sequel.

  • I'm glad they aren't going to throw in a "gimmick" use of the stylus just cause it's on the DS. Better that they just say "Hey, we don't need the stylus, so we're not going to use it." But that doesn't rule out that there might not be SOME touch screen features. Just don't expect any :P Michiru Yamane is the person who did the soundtracks for Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Lament of Innocence, Curse of Darkness, and Bloodlines....so basically, we can expect some good songs :) She only composed a few songs in Dawn of Sorrow, so it should be even better! FINALLY they bring us a Castlevania game that will be BIG! THIS is one of the biggest things I've been looking for! I'm also happy to see that we won't be limited to just using the whip. This new skill system sounds interesting, and I hope that it is as fun as the Soul system. Hopefully Charlotte's magic won't be as low grade as Yoko's magic from Dawn of Sorrow...although, they're both from the church :P lol It also seems like we might move away from the "castle" theme and go to different locations around the WWII world....Britain, Egypt, Germany, etc. Well, this is my #1 game I'm looking forward to this year now :)
