GBA Edge goes GBA

Future Games Magazine is going to publish a GBA-only edition. Head inside for the full story.

Future Games, the videogames magazine portfolio of Future Publishing, is extending its offering with the launch of two new one-off publications - both timed to go on sale in the traditionally busy run-up to Christmas.

One of these special, one-off magazines is Edge Presents Retro, a brand extension of the well-established Edge magazine. On sale 06/12/02, Edge Presents Retro counts 116 pages and is a comprehensive guide to playing and collecting classic videogames.

A mix of interviews, reviews, hands-on guides, features and competitions, Edge Presents Retro offers the same high production standards as Edge magazine itself and is edited by games industry veteran and former Edge editor, Tony Mott.

Commenting on the one-off, special edition of Edge, Mott says: "With three major games consoles in the market, this Christmas looks set to be one of the biggest for the games industry. More and more people are getting into videogames. And while these next-generation consoles take their place in the mainstream market, retro gaming is also becoming increasingly popular."

"Everyone remembers classics like Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Donkey Kong, but discussion about these machines rarely amounts to anything more than just pub talk; we're actually looking at the retro scene properly and in some detail. That means, for example, that rather than simply printing a bunch of old screenshots, we actually went out and interviewed the likes of Atari founder Nolan Bushnell and Eugene Jarvis, who created the legendary Defender. I hand-picked a team of experts in each particular retro field to work on this special edition, and the result is something that will be fascinating to anyone with a real passion for videogaming.

"As one of the most respected magazines in the industry, Edge is perfectly poised to be dedicating a special edition to retro gaming. And similarly to the classic games, this one-off title should be considered more as a collector's item worth treasuring than merely a magazine."

The second of Future Games' one-off magazines to be released this Christmas is Game Boy Advance (GBA) magazine, Advance.

Following the same A5-sized format as Future Games' two previous GBA specials (released in April 2002 and December 2001), Advance magazine counts 132 pages and is on sale 28/11/02.

Billed as the ultimate GBA companion, Advance offers a content line-up reaching from features, reviews and tips to walkthroughs and challenges. Advance issue three retails at ?3.50 and is covermounted with a free pack of two TDK Xtreme batteries and a voucher offering ?5 off any Game Boy Advance game.

Sean Atkins is senior editor of Advance magazine. Commenting on this third instalment of the title, he says: "This is another unbelievably great value package for every GBA gamer. It's absolutely stuffed with 79 reviews, an unmissable complete guide to Yoshi's Island, ?5 off any GBA game for every reader and two free GBA batteries - all for just ?3.50. Bargain!"
