GBA SP Can Be Deadly
Well, incorrect pirate copies of the GameBoy Advance SP can be deadly...
In the autumn of 2004, Coop Norden bought in 3000 Game Boy Advance SPs from the Danish company Sky City. In the box was a faulty AC-adapter. However, this AC-adapter was pirated and not made by Nintendo. To make things worse, these AC-adapters can be extremely dangerous to the users: the adapter does not meet the electricity security agency's requirements and contains a malfunction which can cause an electrical shock. This shock can cause the adapter to catch fire or, even worse, be deadly to a person holding it or the 'GBA SP' attached to it.
Coop Norden, who bought the Game Boy Advance SPs, thought that they where Official Nintendo products. Bergsala AB (the official Nintendo distributor in Sweden), Nintendo of Europe and Coop Norden are now working on informing all that may have bought a Game Boy Advance SP with a pirated AC-adapter.
Official Nintendo distributor Bergsala reacted on the matter by stating that the handheld is "very good done". The copies are impressively constructed and almost impossible to pick the pirate handheld from the real thing. It is possible to determine whether you've got a pirate unit though: Simply look at the type of screw used in the machine. The official AC-adapter uses Trox-screws (the 6-sided screws), while the pirated AC-adapter uses Philips-screws (default cross-shaped screws).
If you have a AC-adapter with Philips-screws you should go to your nearest Coop-shop to get a Official replacement AC-adapter.
