3DS BREAKING: Nintendo 3DS Officially announced

Breaking news, as Nintendo has just officially announced the successor to their Nintendo DS: the Nintendo 3DS (name not final).

Although information is scarce at this point, we are delighted to share the first snippits of information on Nintendo's next handheld: the Nintendo 3DS (name not final).

Nintendo of Europe has just confirmed to us that Nintendo is planning to release the Nintendo 3DS near the end of the current Fiscal Year, ending March 2011. The new handheld will feature 3D view without the use of special glasses as seen with recent movies such as Avatar or Alice in Wonderland. How the technology will work exactly remains unknown for the moment, but the recent experiments with the Nintendo DSi's camera look promising.

The Nintendo 3DS will also feature backwards compatibility with the Nintendo DS software library, inclusing the Nintendo DSi-only and -enhanced titles. From this point of view, we can also conclude that the Nintendo 3DS will feature at least 2 cameras, touch screen and a resolution of at least 2 times 256x192 pixels, perhaps even combined into a single screen.

At the moment we do not have any more information on the Nintendo 3DS, but we hope to be able to inform you a little more over the next month. Nintendo promised to reveal all at their E3 Media Summit in June.

  • There are rumours abound that the distance between the two screens is going to be very small so that developers could use both of them as a single screen. It's certainly interesting though. And as it is being touted as the successor to the DS, and talk from developers of near Gamecube quality graphics, it could certainly be a very interesting handheld console.
