New Nintendo DSi planned?
Whether this is Nikkei trying to stall Nintendo DSi sales or actually have a firm base for their claims remains unknown for the moment. It is a fact however that Nikkei claims a new type of Nintendo DSi will hit the Japanese stores before the end of the year.
According to Nikkei, Nintendo is planning to launch a new version of its Nintendo DSi with a larger screen in Japan. The new system is said to hit the stores as early this year. Nintendo however has not yet responded on these rumours.
The story run by Nikkei claims that Nintendo hopes that the large-screen version, with whoppin' 4 inch screens to match the PSP, will boost the currently declining DSi sales and also hit the current piracy problems with the handheld. This latter issue was already confirmed by Nintendo for the Korean and Chinese markets, which are set for a release of the (regular?) Nintendo DSi by the end of the year as well.
The bigger screen is nothing new in rumours. Last year, rumours in the Internet already spoke of a big-screen Nintendo DS Lite targetted at older consumers by making it easier to view the contents on the screen. Nikkei goes a little further by also claiming that the bigger screens could lead to new applications for the Nintendo DSi, including electronic books and videos.
The large-screen Nintendo DSi is said to sell for 18,900 yen, about the same as the current units.
