ALL Japan weeklies; DS domination

The DS holds top 4 software positions with the DSi in top slot for hardware. Wii peaks to three. Stocks and sales remain shaky. Nintendo comments.

For May 4 through May 10:

"It's been a tough month across the board in all categories, and it's likely that it's impacting video games," said Cammie Dunaway, NOA executive VP of sales and marketing.

Software

  • Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Sora no Tankentai - DS - 44,012
  • Dragon Ball Z: Story Saiyajin Raishuu - DS - 41,085
  • WarioWare Myself - DS - 40,714
  • Mario & Luigi RPG 3 - DS - 25,852
  • Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G - PSP - 23,387
Hardware

  • DSi - 55,382 units
  • PSP - 43,009 units
  • Wii - 24,397 units
This week summed up:

Second dismal sales month in U.S. slumps Wii sales down over half, reports Bloomberg news. U.S. stores sold 340,000 Wii in April, down from 714,000 a year earlier, said NPD. Sales of video games stateside dropped 23 percent.

"We think the market potential of Wii may have peaked out," Satoru Kikuchi, a Tokyo-based analyst at Deutsche Bank AG, wrote in a May 11 report. "We think the market will begin to lower expectations on Nintendo, which is likely to enter a period of profit decline."

Nintendo closed down 0.8 percent for the week in Osaka trading. An interesting offset; Sony surged 7.1 percent on American banks' buy recommendation.

Nintendo had the four top-selling games in April, including 'Wii Fit', which sold 471,000 copies, and 'Pokemon Platinum', with sales of 433,000.

"It's been a tough month across the board in all categories, and it's likely that it's impacting video games," said Cammie Dunaway, NOA executive VP of sales and marketing.
