MotionPlus vs. suspected Xbox motion-camera?
Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft is about to release a motion-camera that will allow players to simulate action on-screen, akin to central theme of Nintendo's Wii.
According to the WSJ, Microsoft is developing a videocamera for the Xbox 360 that will allow players to control games with movement, an admitted attempt to attract the new 'casual gamer' market.
The camera should work similarly to the Wii controls but does not require users to hold anything in their hand to accomplish the same, said undisclosed sources. Microsoft declined to comment.
The camera is said to use 3-D technology providing the most current in videocamera schematics. The company recently acquired an Israel company 3DV Systems, believed to be behind the camera and hold similar patents. 3DV's chief exective Zvika Klier said: "Unfortunately I can't comment on the rumors surrounding this deal. We will provide more information when we can."
Nintendo's planned spring release of MotionPlus, which received a lack-luster reception at last year's E3, could cut Microsoft's plan off at the knees. That is, if the increased motion peripheral works and is employed better, rather quickly, than it was at E3.
