Japan Weeklies, handhelds hold on
Seven week winning streak for PS3 eclipsed by continued handheld dominance. New title in the popular Sengoku Basara series headlines on PSP. Nintendo stock tumbles.
Handheld games and systems stay on top, as PS3 continues to squeeze the Wii and generally unpopular Xbox 360. Sengoku Basara, localized name 'Devil Kings' didn't see a lot of play in North America or Europe, with only the first PS2 title seeing translation. Sengoku Basara Battles Heroes debuted impressively, nearly topping the sales of the lower 4 combined.
For April 6 through April 12:
Software
- Sengoku Basara Battles Heroes - PSP - 85,731
- Oboro Muramasa - Wii - 28,807
- Mario & Luigi RPG 3 - DS - 25,194
- Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G - PSP - 17,942
- Pro Yakyuu Famista DS 2009 - 16,676
- PSP - 40,886 units
- DSi - 40,673 units
- PS3 - 16,701 units
Nintendo Co. dived 6.2 percent in Osaka trading after research group NPD said Nintendo's Wii console sold 601,000 units in the United States in March, down 17 percent from the year before, stoking investor worries about a slowdown in demand for the ever-selling game machine, reports Forbes news.
Nintendo commented, saying the comparison could be misleading as Wii demand was boosted in March 2008 by the launch of the blockbuster software title 'Super Smash Bros. Brawl'. This makes a lot more sense than the stuffed shirt squabble.
