ALL No competition please, says Nintendo Pres. Iwata

Of the new DSi, Nintendo's Iwata said the company "doesn't have any intention of directly competing with existing products" such as cell phones or iPods. And three new funky colors added to the Japan DSi market.

When the DSi was first announced, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata agreed the sales and marketability of the DSi would not be in direct competition with similar electronic devices. He hasn't changed his tune and believes the media has a tendency to make up inter-corporate rivalries that don't really exist. But even with the admonishment of our guy Iwata, the "rivalry" already exists in the minds of consumers (myself included) that are truly baffled by the array of products available to them. Iwata's view doesn't coincide, missing the point.

Three additional colors will be added to the Japanese market on March 20th: pink, lime green and metallic blue. In addition to the launch colors of black and white, like the rest of the world; the U.S. is relegated to black and light blue. The snazy new colors retail for ¥18,900, $195 with the lousy exchange rate. The DSi has topped the Japanese chart since its release, at $30 less.

The relative strength of Nintendo Co. under a mudslide of an economy is like watching an action film, the lone samurai facing an onslaught. Three recession-ravaged weeks, and Nintendo's head is still above water. Perhaps there is no 'direct competition', not for the sake of innovation, but because Nintendo doesn't need it, doesn't have any; because they're the only ones making money right now.
