Sony of Two Minds On DSi Announcement
Sure it will be a hit, if you're a child.
Sony has always acknowledged their sales rival in the Nintendo DS, but that doesn't keep their criticism of its demographic in check. The recent announcement of the multi-function DSi has not changed this view. No surprise here.
Speaking to Gizmodo, John Koller, director of hardware marketing for Sony, took the opportunity to avow the probable success of the DSi; but played the tired kid machine line.
"I can see the DSi being successful. The DS lite was obviously very successful. Will DSi do well with [the DS's] demographic? It probably will. Will it be a product that expands their user base [beyond] under 12? I'm not sure."
Perhaps Koller forgets the remarkable shift in age demographic Nintendo has seen in their current generation systems.

Like the reporter on Kotaku said, how can you expand into an already saturated market? Currently DS has reached global saturation, as in anyone who want one already has at least one. Sony is right for the wrong reasons. It will take a lot of marketing strategies and promotion for an already saturated market to purchase this new product.
But sadly Nintendo DSi is too much limited in function to be a rival for the multimedia PSP capabilities.
I don't really care about the multimedia capabilities of the PSP. I just want to play games and the DS does that really well. It just sounds like more sore loser talk from Sony really.
Exactly, a "gaming" console should do just as it is, gaming. I really don't care for the multimedia and other functionalities. A company needs to stay with its core competence and not forget its goal, which is to provide games for gamers. Sony had forgotten about that. A PSP is now nothing more than a fancy iPod. 98% of the titles are either movies or games that are ported to the system. There is very little game on it that people would enjoy that the people haven't already beaten.
