DSi Region Locked After All?
Our colleagues from Computer & VideoGames got word from Nintendo of Europe on the rumoured DSi region lock, and it isn't pretty...
Our colleagues from C&VG got word from Nintendo on the rumoured Nintendo DSi's region lock. According to the representative, "DSi software (software that is only compatible with DSi) is region locked, eg: European DSi software can only be played on European DSi consoles".
On the account of regular Nintendo DS titles, the representative continued: "Nintendo DS software however is region free so you can play any DS software on DSi from any region. You can also browse the Internet on your DSi wherever you are in the world and exchange your photos with friends from around the world."
Apparently, the region lock for Nintendo DSi(-only) titles comes from the internet communication functionalities within the DSi itself, which are... you guessed it: specific for each region. Furthermore, the DSi will include parental controls, for which each region features a unique age limit.

A sad day for importer... Nintendo has just disabled the one true great thing that make DS far superior than PSP, importing.
The Nintendo DS can't be superior than the PSP because of import games. Playstation Portable can actually play imported games on UMD without any modify to the hardware. The regional lock is only for the movies, so who cares?
