U.S. International Trade Commission Opens Wii Probe
More patent suits and some official action. Nintendo remains unaffected.
As if the recent slew of curious patent suits against Nintendo wasn't enough, now the American government has stepped up the heat. The U.S. International Trade Commission has opened a probe into the Wii Game Console. The probe is based on Hillcrest Laboratories allegation the system infringes on four of their patents for a hand-held pointing device that organizes content on a television screen. Hillcrest licensed the technology to electronics companies including Eastman Kodak and seeks to block the import of Wii systems into the United States. The ITC will investigate these allegations. Nintendo responded with respect for the patent system, denied the allegation and stated they "intend to vigorously defend this action."
