No Wii DVD Playback Soon
Nintendo has officially announced that there'll be no DVD playback in upcoming Wii systems for the time being.
Back in November 2006 (just one week away from exactly a year ago), Nintendo announced a revision of the Wii console which would feature DVD-movie playback support. This new version of the Wii was said to be released somewhere during the second half of 2007.
Now that the second half of 2007 is nearly over, Nintendo speaks once again about the console. As the official statement reads, Nintendo intended to release the revisioned hardware in this timeframe, but changed course due to the huge success of the Wii. The company claims it's a better course to focus on one version of the system first.
Whether DVD-playback-capable Wii's will hit the stores in 2008 remains unknown.

Who cares of DVD playback in 2008? In almost all houses there is a DVD player, in my opinion there isn't need for a Wii that reads DVD video. If they are really doing this revision of the Wii, just like the "Q" was for the Gamecube, they should include HD-DVD or BRD playback to be interesting. If not, the standard version of Wii will be sufficient for everyone.
It's all about HDDVD and Blu Ray now.
