NDS New FPS: The Ward

Screens, Info and Teaser Trailer inside.

The recent Game Developer Conference threw up a few surprises with developer Renegade Kid announcing The Ward (working title) for the Nintendo DS. The Ward utilizes the Nintendo DS hardware to tell a twisted story with gruesome 3D visuals and First Person Shooter (FPS) gameplay. The game's interactive narrative reveals the puzzling nature of a strange hospital frozen-in-time, and introduces a cast of peculiar characters.

The Ward tells the tale of a man who awakens to find himself alone in a derelict hospital on a stormy night. Presented with seemingly helpful clues and confronted by the results of grotesque surgical experiments that roam the halls, he must face his deepest fears, unlock the mysteries of the hospital, and escape with his life.

The Ward takes advantage of the unique properties of the Nintendo DS system with touch-screen exploration, puzzles, and Wi-Fi multiplayer gameplay. Using the Nintendo DS touch-screen to look and aim provides the player with an enhanced sensation of freedom and control. The dynamic real-time flashlight immerses the player deep into the game's eerie atmosphere and allows the player to search the dark corridors of the hospital.

"The Ward offers a completely new experience on the Nintendo DS," said Jools Watsham, Owner and Creative Director at Renegade Kid. "We're pushing the Nintendo DS to its' limits, with chilling environments, demented enemy characters, and real-world weapons all realized in 3D," added Gregg Hargrove, Owner and Art Director at Renegade Kid.

Renegade Kid is actively seeking a publisher for The Ward. Scheduled to launch this Autum, The Ward is Renegade Kid's debut title and you can see a selection of screens and a teaser trailer by clicking here.

  • Looks cheap and corny. After seeing what Dragon Quest Monsters Joker and Final Fantasy III can do, this kind of graphics is not even using a tenth of what DS can do. Like Ueda Jiro (from Trick, the j-dorama) said, "why don't you do your best". As a programmer's side of view, if they are going to release a game that's half finished like that they might as well not release at all. Even GBA can achieve better graphics than this.

  • nice ammount of texture detail, and very nice flashlight lightning

  • I do game design by using TV3D engine profetionally, and this is not nice texture. This is the old 8-bit texture style that was used for games as early as Quake II. Using the flash light as primary light source is nice on Silent Hill. But unless the light engine can pre-render lighting effect into binary file, the run time rendering will be a mass.

  • The should have used pre rendering for this. It looks good as it is but i do believe if they had pre rendered the thing then they would have been able to get a lot more out of the ds in terms of graphics.

  • no sir, I don't like it.

  • please, the GBA CANNOT handle those graphics, lesomeguy get your facts straight, and the only reason Joker looks better is because it is a cartoony cell shaded style, It's quite hard for DS to copy realistic graphics. Those are not half bad for early screens. Looks WAAAAYYYYY better than wolfenstein or doom. anyone who thinks otherwise needs their eyes checked.
