WII Wii Points Star Exchange Rate Known?

According to our German colleagues, the exchange rate for the VIP Stars-program by Nintendo of Europe to buy Wii Points is known. But there's more bad news for the collectors.

According to our German colleagures at ConsoleWars.de, a German magazine called N-Zone is reporting that the VIP Stars from Nintendo of Europe's VIP program can be exchanged for Wii Points at an exchange rate of 4 to 1. That's 4 stars for 1 Wii Point.

A simple calculation shows why European gamers may feel disappointed about this new statement, which we (for now) regards as a rumour: Wii Points cards can be purchased in the average videogame store for 20 euro's (2000 points). In short, 100 points represent 1 euro. From time to time, the Stars Catalogue offers Nintendo DS or Game Boy Advance titles for 4500 stars. As these titles can also be bought in a normal videogame store for roughly 45 euro's (on average), we can conclude that 100 stars are the equivalent of 1 euro as well. Now on to the Wii Points exchange rate.

With the same amount of stars, one is said to be able to 'purchase' 1125 Wii Points (4500 / 4). That's 45 euro's for just over 1000 Wii Points. If one would take these stars to the nearest videogame store, you could buy two 2000-points cards for that money.

But wait, there's more! Nintendo of Europe also recently changed their policy on the VIP Stars, as can be read on the official NoE websites. Twelve months after stars have been awarded by registering a product or filling in a survey, the stars must be redeemed or face the big black hole: that's right, you'll lose the stars after twelve months. Stars that were already in your possession must be redeemed before the end of 2007, so even if you thought about saving up for something huge, you'd better hurry.

Nintendo has not yet officially announced the exchange rate, nor has it commented on the statements in N-Zone magazine. Until that moment arrives, we're keeping our hopes up that the print magazine is goofing up.

  • Well, I didn´t realy expect a 1:1 trade, but I still think it would be fair.. just like "Buy two new Nintendo Games and get 1 NES Game for free!" or "(about) tree NinGames für one SNES Game" or "four Games for an N64 game".. sounds fair, dont you think? "Spend all you Money for 8 Nintendo Games and you get one old and dusty NES game for free" sounds kind of.. I dont know.. its still better than gettin nothing, but noch MUCH better

  • That is a terrible exchange rate if its true. And if they have to be redeemed by the end of 2007, then im screwed. I have 6000+ stars and there is absolutely nothing to buy on the star catalogue and at that exchange rate ill be going to my local game store to buy the Wii points instead.

  • Stars should be redeemed? Oh, thanks! Knowing that three years ago I had never registered a game till now.
