Pass Your Driving Theory Test (Nintendo DS) - Review by Andrew

7.5

Introduction

Because of the touch-screen interface the DS has had its fair share of training and personal guidance titles, over the years we've been treated to everything from dog training to cooking guides and even aids to stop smoking. This time last year there was even a driving training title from Atari. Unlike the Atari release though, this 'game' is much more focused and its aim is to help you pass the Theory part of the UK Driving Test. This has been a challenge for some years now as demonstrated by a whole host of CD-ROMs that have attempted to replace the simple printed version as an easy way to pass this section of the test. So is this latest DS offering more interesting (or more useful) than thumbing through the Highway Code?

Gameplay

Given that this is a test-based title the 'gameplay' is incredibly straightforward and the front end is divided up into a number of different sections. The first of these allows you to select the type of test you are studying for as both cars and motorcycles are supported. You then select the type of test you have the time for, ranging from a quick quiz to the full thing. Practice makes perfect though and it's a good idea to try a few 'Quick Test's before going for the big one. You can set this to ask 10, 20, 30 or even 40 questions, with a timer should you want the added pressure. There's a DSA (Driving Standards Agency) Test where you can concentrate on a section of the Highway Code if you feel you are a little weak on, for instance, Motorway Rules or even Accidents. You can combine all of this into a Custom Test or try your hand at the full Mock Theory. Where this title really wins though is because as well as constantly plotting your progress (or lack of it) it also indicates and explains your incorrect answers, so you can (in theory) constantly improve. Unfortunately there are only two save slots although once you have passed you are unlikely to need this again unless, like us, you just want to embarrass yourself or your friends with a complete lack of knowledge having passed the test many years ago.

Controls

All touch-screen so forget about this section.

Graphics

Given that this is exam based we weren't exactly expecting the visuals to push the system to its limits. What you do get are clear screens that are easy to read and navigate although some of the photos could do with being a higher resolution.

Sound

Other than the odd click, none.

Dual screen

Simply a case of selecting the answer you want. What were you expecting?

Final comments

Clearly you are only going to consider this title if you are actually attempting to pass your test and given just how expensive it is to even attempt this now, it's probably worth the money. Where it trumps the free web-based tests is in the 'summing up' section because the ability to see just where you have failed, and why, is the only real way to improve your knowledge. Its other use is for overly confident drivers who are under the illusion that they still 'know it all'. Believe me, after going through this once our twice, you'll suddenly realize, you don't.

Pro: Easy to Use, Good Range of Questions
Con: Only Two Save Slots.
Final score: 7.5
