DS Lite Announced
Lik-sang claimed it, various other retailers claimed it, Famitsu claimed it, Nintendo of Europe and America denied it, but still: Nintendo of Japan announced the Nintendo DS Lite.
Nintendo of Japan has announced the new Nintendo DS Lite. On sale in Japan starting March 2 this year for a price of 16.800 yen (approximately 120 euro), the Nintendo DS Lite will feature a brand new design. The Nintendo DS Lite will be thinner than the original Nintendo DS with a mere 21.5 millimeter compared to the original 28.9 millimeter. In total, the measurements of the Nintendo DS Lite will be 133.0 x 73.9 x 21.5 millimeter (length x width x thickness), compared to the original 148.7 x 84.7 x 28. 9 millimeter.
When looking at the Nintendo DS Lite, we can also see a change of button placement. The Start and Select buttons have moved downwards, while the D-pad and A, B, X and Y buttons are moved more to the top. The touch-screen of the Nintendo DS Lite will thus be placed more between your hands.
But there's more! You thought the Nintendo DS's backlit screens were bright? The screens of the Nintendo DS Lite will feature four levels of brightness! Nintendo of Japan mentions that the 'Lite' part in the new product name is partly based on the new design, and partly on the new brightness-levels. After all, the Nintendo DS will be Lighter.
There has been no official statement on the European and American release of the new Nintendo DS Lite, but we'll keep you up to date!

@LeSomeGuy The iDS is a nintendo licenced product, it is virtually a DS, but renamed (eg. Famicom in Japan, and NES in america). The iDS can play all games of all languages and comes in silver or red. Also, iQue was created to combat piracy, since its first consle was a n64-in-a-controller to prevent duplication of games. The company has since been used to distribute nintendo products under that more local and established brand.
*whistles* That's a beauty, can't wait to get me one of those...
@RavenWorks The power switch is now a flick-switch on the side but I don´t know about brightness controls...
I think this is fine for those who don't already have a DS, but the design hasn't changed enough for me to buy another one. The d-pad and face buttons look like they are just as high as they are on the current DS, I don't see this making me feel any more comfortable when I play my DS games.
big deal...
I LIKE I LIKE!!!!!! I LOVE IT ALOT!!!! it will be hard to put my ds into my draw after going so mental when i got it!! i hope it has a gba port for multiplayer couse ds didnt otherwise ninty will hvae 5 consoles in the market! gbasp, gbamicro,ds,dslite, and soon to be revo!! GASP
Oh my gosh!!!!!! I HAVE to get this! I like the D-Pad and A B X Y buttons being farther up.
Drats, I want one...
I prefer the old one, and i will buy the old Nintendo DS in bundle with Metroid Prime Hunters.
Does anyone know where the power button is, or the brightness controls?
I'm getting this purely to enjoy METROID PRIME: HUNTERS in all its brighter screen glory :D
Maybe I was wrong. This looks awesome. I want one
I always hated the Select and Start placement on the top; this should make them better. Make this shiny red like the Rev mockups, and I'll snatch this up in a second. I love the Micro influence here. :)
I hope its durable and has long battery life
Probably the 4 levels of brightness is there to improve the battery time of charge, so you can select a less brighter level to continue to play.
Also the GBA slot has a little cover on it...cute? lol
If my DS explodes, I'll get this, but otherwise, I'm not going to replace him... er, it.
yhmmmmm to get 1 or not get 1 tht is the question
Also someone has played it allready and likes it.
give me two! :D
Credit me, I did send a email and posted it in the forums.
I want it.
Looks at Date Todays my Birthday YAAAY! Birthday money is going to THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"The touch-screen of the Nintendo DS Lite will thus be placed more between your hands." ...How can something be "between your hands" and then be "a little more between your hands"? =P It can be closer to your hands, though. Another thing that I thought of, not that I'd have anything to do with Sweden of Swedish people and not that I like their language but anyway, "lite" in swedish means "a little".
Well the DS lite is "a litte" smaller XD
ZOMG!!! im gonna just say it now... im going to get this.
oh yeah, sorry for the double post: more info -There is a GBA slot -Stylus will go in on the side. -Power button is a switch on the side. -Will be launched in Japan in three colors. (White for sure. Other two have not been revealed.)
@J-fox: with the regular DS, the touchscreen is horizontally positioned between your hand, that's true. However, it's not perfectly aligned with your hands vertically. By moving the touch-screen downwards, and the D-pad and buttons (and thus: your hands) upwards, the bottom screen is relatively more 'between' your hands.
sweet new look, but i don't think i will be replacing my current DS. looks too much like the old 2 screen game and watch gadgets. good for the people who like it though.
but even if it makes a few tweaks, its still a ds playing ds games nonthelesss
This looks cool, but I wont be buying one. Im happy with my Electric Blue DS!
i want it now!
Dennis: Okay, I get it now. I still think it's kind of a hard-to-understand way to say it, but I guess it's still better than saying something like "...The touch screen will be vertically closer to the hypothetical line between the center points of the palms of your hands." =P
I looked it up, iQue was a join venture between a Chinese-American (?) and Nintendo to get around Chinese government because they refuse to let a lot of Nintendo product hit the market. Then, due to the same issue, iQue as produced in China and own by that Chinese-American and completely independent from Nintendo. This redesigned DS is a Chinese production, use the new LED screen produced by Taiwan. China said they were going to release their own remodeled version of DS regardless they has Nintendo's support or not. On another note, when the iDS system first came out, most of the DS games cannot be played on that system. iDS is not a Nintendo licenced product.
The whole rumor get started when Nintendo first made the comment of they are remodeling some consoles to make them better and faster. iQue makers thought they mean NDS SP, so Lik-Sang produced that news and eventually leaked to Amazone also. Then Nintendo Japan had another press release to clear out their comment, they meant they are always updating technology, they neither confirmed nor denied the existance of NDS SP. And I guess this news clear out all of the rumors.
Looks very good, can't wait for it to be my THIRD Nintendo DS.. :P
