ALL News Tidbits

It's time for a summary on all the tiny newsitems we skipped or forgot during the previous week.

Let's start with Nintendo of Europe's commercials to promote the Nintendo DS's launch in two weeks (March 11). Two commercials have been released for this purpose, and if you thought the American commercials were good: these are brilliant. Both commercials are dedicated to the 'touch' feature. The first one can be found here at NoE's website (2 MB, .mov), the second commercial here at Jeux-France (4 MB, .wmv)

Next up, a special edition styli. Where the GBA and GBA SP set a trend to release a limited edition handheld with all major releases, it seems that the Nintendo DS is going for a more silent approach: special edition styli. eggstylus.jpg We had already seen Kirby's pink stylus in the past, but in Japan two new styli were announced last week. The first special stylus comes with Pac-Pix. A yellow pencil-shaped stylus starring Namco's logo nd, of course, PacMan himself smiling on the top.

In the meantime, Square-Enix announced that their upcoming game Egg Monster Heroes will feature a special stylus too. Well, whether we can call this a stylus... It's shaped as a hand with its finger stretched. Are we supposed to play with that in public?

Japan came up with more in the previous week. Nintendo of Japan started the Nintendo DS downloading service at selected retailers throughout Japan. At these kiosks, gamers can download game demos or updates. The first batch of available downloads consists of playable demos of Meteos and Hitofude (Polarium for the non-Japanese) and a number of songs for Jam with the Band including Donkey Konga and Kid Icarus songs. Whether we'll get to see the download service in the future too, still remains a question with an answer shrouded in the dark.

Japanse magazines and newspapers always manage to come up with exclusive newsitems. Nihon Keizai Shimbun is one of those and added a story on the new Pokon titles for the Nintendo DS: Pokon Diamond and Pearl. According to the publication, Eizo Nakano (part of The Pokon Company) told them that the new games will be released in japan in November 2005, a US release would be somewhere near March 2006 and a European release... well, count on somewhere mid-2006.

Moving on to the GBA. Capcom Europe has updated its releaselists. While Mega Man Anniversary Collection is still missing on the list, the new Battle Network games got dated. Mega Man Battle Network 5: Team Colonel and Team Protoman will be released somewhere in June 2005. To celebrate, we'll throw in the boxarts as well.

But now for the rumour of the week(end): The Nintendo DS Online. In the last few months, the Nintendo DS was said to be going online through various means. Team XLink was working on getting the DS tunneled and partly succeeded with that. However, since they could not get the handheld to work with different hardware setups, they decided to can their DS project for the time being. WarpPipe was working on the mystery called 'DemaSked'. While the hype more-or-less vanished with the information on the service not being published, DemaSked is still in the works. On the topic of the WarpPipe-members' spinoff project called 'Nitro Online', it became very, VERY quiet on this project after the initial announcement... However, the story isn't over yet. One of our readers from the US (Jack) pointed out to us that the February edition of Nintendo's official magazine 'Nintendo Power' mentioned a 'special article that will change the handheld society' to be published in the March edition. Could this be it? With the rumoured March-announcements it sounds fair to accept. We'll keep you informed on this one.

  • I havent seen Kirby's pink stylus, what does it look like? And Pac Pix looks like too small/ simple of a game to pay full price for.

  • http://gba.n64europe.com/index.php?id=3090 It's not a photo, but at least you know what it'll look like: a normal stylus, but pink.
