NDS Meteos Update

Single player modes, single cartridge multiplayer, item creation, and more.

In a recent interview with Famitsu magazine, Masahiro Sakurai, the father of Kirby and Super Smash Bros., revealed key gameplay details about Meteos, the title he is directing under Q Entertainment.

For those new to the game, Meteos functions by dropping multicolored blocks onto the player's screen. The player has no control over the blocks, but can, using the stylus, manipulate the position of a block in a column. if a row of three same-colored blocks, either horizontally or vertically, is formed, then the blocks convert into rockets, boosting all the blocks above them into space. Each color of block has a different amount of fuel, so it is possible that one type of block will not be sufficient to lift the blocks above it beyond the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the top screen displays scores and your planet as a whole.

A new function in Meteos is item creation. Launching blocks into space will construct items for you, allowing you to launch them at your opponent's planets. These items focus on destroying your opponent's blocks, distrupting their strategy. Some items that you'll be able to use are the Cross Bomb, which destroys one column and row to form a cross shape, the Toll Hammer, which consistently pounds blocks off the screen, and the Baby Weight, which destroys three columns of blocks.

New information from the Famitsu interview also reveals that the single player adventure mode will be called "Star Trip" in which you travel around the various landscapes of the planet trying to repel the meteors in each area. Simple and Time Attack modes are also available, with the former simply presenting you with a time limit and touchscreen while the latter offers a challenge to obtain the highest score possible before a time limit expires, or a challenge to repel the greatest number of meteors in a set period of time.

Sakurai advises that despite the single player options, multiplayer will offer the greatest Meteos experience, featuring single cartridge support for up to four different players. In addition, next week Sakurai will be promoting Meteos at the World Hobby Fair in Tokyo. In an example of the first promotional use of the DS download function, attendees with their own DS' will be able to download a playable demo of Meteos that they'll be able to keep until their systems shut down.

Also touched upon in the interview was Meteos' opening FMV movie, which our readers can stream for free here:
