Nintendo just announced the Nintendo DSi at its fall presentation. While more details on the device come in by the minute, the Nintendo DSi is described by Nintendo as a "third platform". Another third pillar for Nintendo, meaning the DSi will be a complement to the existing Nintendo DS (Lite) instead of a replacement.

The Nintendo DSi is visually almost equaly to the Nintendo DS Lite, apart from a size decrease of 12 percent. This gain in portability is achieved by removing the GBA slot from the device. To compensate, the Nintendo DSi owns two 3.25 inch screens (compared to the original 3 inches) and two cameras.

No word yet on the rumoured SD slot, however the DSi is said to feature internal storage... Interesting...

Update And more details... More details on the DSi have arrived. Apparently, the DSi will feature an SD slot to store pictures (taken by your trusty included camera) on. Using the SD card it's possible to view your pictures on Wii.

Next up is an included browser. The DSi features a built-in browser which can be used to, buckle up, download games from the DSi Shop. DSiWare games will be available for the wellknown points-system carrying a pricetage of "zilch", 200 points, 500 points and 800 points ("Premium titles"). New customers will get 1000 points for free to spend at the DSi Shop.

Update The DSi will be released on November 1st in Japan and 2009 for the rest of the world

Update DS Stations will become Nintendo Zone services and the DSi will come with a Nintendo Zone Viewer.

Colors announced are white and frosted black

Update Miis now on DSi in a Lifestyle Rhythm Calculator software.

Games due out around launch: Valk Profile DS, Kirby (most likely SSU), Kyotaro, Rockman (most likely MMSF3), World Food, Phantasy Star Zero, Momotaro Dentetsu

  • I have to admit, I didn't think this'd happen...

  • And it comes out on November 1st also, not sure if it is 2008 or 2009 but wouldn't be surprised if it is next month.

  • DSi Presentation over.

  • Is that a black border around the screens in image 3? I would expect a stretched image to be honest

    Dennis, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • I think they are actually showing people that the black border represents how much bigger it is by and when it actually comes out it will most likely be stretched.

  • The first video example of how it works here: http://tubedirects.net/index.php?q=nintendo-dsi Very cooool !!!!

  • I have checked out all of the specs, it's pretty much all the same to DSLite. All except it has no GBA slot but instead it has 2 cameras, it also has internal and external flash memory support. So in short, unless they have made a game that utilized the camera functionalities, DSi is just a DSLite with gizmos.

  • The DSiWare titles would likely be DSi-only...

    Dennis, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • I like how it actually can run applications and you can purchase them with Wii Points/Nintendo Points among other things.

    jofra01, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • Nintendo should release a GBA cartridge for the DS Lite to allow DS Ware downloads: if not, this service will be useless for most of the Nintendo DS owners.

    Olpus Bonzo, 30-11--0001 at 00:00
  • I don't think Nintendo will realise a GBA cartridge as many people will upgrade to the DSi, they won't admit it now but soon more will have the DSi than the Lite.
